Valheim 1.0 Food Tier List: What to Eat at Every Stage
A Valheim 1.0 food tier list by stage: the best HP, stamina, and Eitr foods at every point, from Meadows berries to the Northern Morning Fare feast.
Food is Valheim’s real equipment system: your maximum health and stamina are set by what you’ve eaten, and death usually traces back to cheap meals. This tier list ranks foods by availability at each biome stage and the role they fill — full nutrition stat tables are being verified for a future update.
How does food work in Valheim?
You hold three food buffs at once, and each food mainly grants health, stamina, or (from the Mistlands on) Eitr. Foods decay over minutes to hours, so the meta is a rotation: one health-weighted food, one stamina-weighted food, and a third that covers whichever resource your build burns. Cooking and cooking stations upgrade raw ingredients into strictly better meals — never eat raw what you can cook. Farming (carrots, turnips, and later crops) turns food from hunting into agriculture.
What are the S-tier foods at each stage?
| Stage | S-tier picks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Raspberries, honey, cooked deer meat | Free/regrowable, and honey scales into mead bases |
| Black Forest | Blueberry-based jams, grilled meats | First stamina-heavy options while mining |
| Swamp | Sausages | The classic swamp staple — balanced and cheap for its tier |
| Mountain | Wolf meat dishes | Health stack for silver-tier fights |
| Plains | Lox meat and pies | Big health + stamina combo tier |
| Mistlands | Eitr foods | Magic builds live or die on Eitr regeneration |
| Ashlands | Ashlands-tier cooked foods | Fire-era stats for Fader’s tier |
| Deep North (1.0) | Kale / Oats / Poteitr dishes, Northern Morning Fare | 1.0’s new crops and the biome’s feast cap the ladder |
Why do feasts and meads matter so much?
Feasts are shared table meals that feed a whole group, and meads are the buff system that food can’t cover. The Bog Witch update (2024) formalized feasts, and 1.0 adds the Northern Morning Fare feast for the Deep North. Meads — brewed from honey and biome ingredients — cover poison resistance (the Bonemass essential), frost resistance, and healing; see the prep notes in the boss order guide.
What should you eat before each boss?
Match your three slots to the fight’s damage profile. Melee-dodge fights (Eikthyr, The Elder) want stamina; tank fights (Bonemass, Yagluth) want health; the magic-era bosses want Eitr plus health. Beginners should follow the rotation basics in the beginner guide before optimizing.
What did 1.0 change about food?
The Deep North adds four plantable crops — Kale, Oats, Poteitr, and Timberwood — plus 24 new foods and the Northern Morning Fare feast. Verified numbers for the headline additions:
- Kale — grows from one seed into three, eaten raw gives +35 HP / +35 stamina; an ingredient across seven of the biome’s dishes (smoked moose meat, fish soup, seal meat soup, and more).
- Oats — ground into Oat Flour at the windmill (also Oat Milk and Oatmeal); raw gives +33 / +33.
- Poteitr — the Eitr vegetable (+35 HP / +35 stamina / +35 Eitr raw), the backbone of magic-build cooking up north.
- Lingonberries — foraged wild across the Deep North; also the food used to tame Moose.
- Northern Morning Fare (feast) — cooked Moose Meat ×3 + Poteitr ×5 + Oat Flour ×2 + Seasoning of the Gourd; grants +85 HP / +85 stamina / +43 Eitr for 50 minutes. Its Seasoning of the Gourd only unlocks at the Bog Witch (220 coins) after you defeat Kall Fimbulbringer — the feast is effectively a post-game reward.
The systems are unchanged — three slots, decaying buffs, cooking upgrades — but the cold makes generous eating non-optional up north. The Deep North guide covers where the crops and stations come from, and the weapon tier list handles the other half of your build.
