Valheim Console Commands in 1.0: How to Enable Them & What Locks Achievements
How to enable the Valheim console in 1.0, the devcommands you need, and which commands permanently flag your world as cheated and lock achievements.
Valheim has no redeem codes — but it does have a full developer console. Since the 1.0 release, using it carelessly has a real cost: most cheat commands permanently mark your world and lock achievements. This page explains how to enable the console and where the achievement line sits.
How do you enable the console in Valheim 1.0?
Add -console as a launch option on Steam, or switch the console on in the settings menu — then press F5. The console has been disabled by default since March 2021: originally you had to right-click Valheim in Steam → Properties → Launch Options and enter -console. Current versions also expose a plain settings-menu toggle, so launch options are no longer the only route. On Game Pass builds the combo differs (LB+RB+Menu on Xbox). Note that cheat commands only work in singleplayer or player-hosted games, not dedicated servers.
What does devcommands do?
devcommands is the master switch that unlocks the cheat command set (it replaced the older imacheater keyword years ago). Typing devcommands in the console toggles developer commands on and off; only after enabling them do commands like spawn or freefly respond.
Which commands lock achievements in 1.0?
Most gameplay-changing commands permanently flag your character and world as cheated, which disables all achievements. Per the official 1.0 FAQ:
- Using cheat commands (for example
spawn) permanently marks your character and the world — there is no supported way to remove the flag, and characters who cheated before 1.0 are marked too. A confirmation prompt now guards the transition as accident protection. - Spawned items carry a “cheated item” marker; picking one up only puts you in a temporary cheated state — discard every cheated item and achievement eligibility returns.
- The free-flight camera (
freefly) is an explicit official exception and does not block achievements. - Cheat-oriented world modifiers — like hammer mode — count as temporary cheats and block certain achievements, even though they’re set at world creation rather than typed into the console.
The practical rule: if a command gives you something you didn’t earn in play, assume it flags the world. If you care about the 53 achievements, run cheats only in a throwaway test world.
What console commands are new in 1.0?
The official patch notes confirm a batch of new commands: confirmcheats, achievements, snow, cinematic, getstat, inventorysize, repairall, findbiome, and more. The official FAQ confirms cheat entries now require a confirmation prompt before the flag sticks; exactly what each new command reports is still being documented by the community wiki. Treat them as part of the cheat set until proven otherwise — the safe assumption is the rule above: anything that gives you something you didn’t earn flags the world.
Is using the console the same as using mods?
No. Valheim has no official mod support and no Steam Workshop — the FAQ is explicit that mods are community-made via third-party loaders (the Thunderstore ecosystem) and need time to catch up after major patches. Console commands are built into the game but carry the cheat-flagging rules above; mods are external and unregulated by the achievement system. Our boss order guide and Deep North guide assume a clean, unflagged playthrough.
For the full command reference, the community wikis maintain long command lists; this page stays focused on the setup path and the achievement rules, which most command pages bury.
