Ashlands Biome Guide: Charred Sieges and Fader in Valheim
The Ashlands biome in Valheim 1.0 — Charred armies, lava seas, flametal fortresses, Asksvin mounts, and Fader's colosseum.
The Ashlands is Valheim’s war biome — a volcanic south where the landscape is half fire and the Charred, an organized undead army, actively besiege you. It’s the penultimate biome, and it exists to make the Deep North feel earned.
What lives in the Ashlands?
The Charred army — Warriors, Marksmen, Twitchers, and Warlocks — plus Morgen, Voltures, Skuggs, Lava Blobs, Fallen Valkyries, and the tameable Asksvin. Charred are the Ashlands’ signature: they come in squads, hold the fortresses, and siege your walls. Morgen and Voltures hunt the skies, Valkyries are the fallen elite, and Bonemaw serpents lurk in the lava seas. Asksvin — the biome’s draft lizards — can be tamed and ridden, making them the Ashlands’ answer to the Deep North’s moose.
What can you gather in the Ashlands?
Flametal — the tier’s metal — plus Grausten and the fragments that build Bells. Flametal ore veins glow in the ash-waste ruins (mine them with a black metal pickaxe) and also drop from Charred Fortress chests, which means the tier’s metal always drags you toward a fight. Grausten is the biome’s building stone. The weapon tier list covers the flametal-tier weapons that carry the Fader fight.

What dungeons and structures are here?
Charred Fortresses, Putrid Holes, and Fader’s Colosseum. The fortresses hold the Bell-fragment altars, Charred chests, and garrisons — crack them open with the tier’s catapults and battering rams. Putrid Holes are the dungeon tier: cleared holes are safe recovery spots and the vegvisirs inside lead to the Tomb of Lord Reto, the Ashlands miniboss. Fader’s altar is a colosseum ring in the ash wastes — hang three crafted Bells on it to summon him. The biome’s shore is lava-boiling, so ocean approaches matter.

How do you survive the heat?
Fire resistance, cover, and never fight the siege on their terms. Fire-resistance mead is non-negotiable; Charred fortresses need to be cracked open rather than charged. The base defense guide applies double here — Charred events hit your base in the Ashlands like nothing else in the game, and the events and raids page tracks what triggers them.
When do you leave the Ashlands?
After Fader — the seventh boss — falls. His drops unlock the 1.0 Deep North tier, where the final boss waits. The boss order has the full road, and the Deep North guide covers what’s waiting up there.
