Sea Creatures in Valheim: Serpents, Leviathans, and Ocean Hunts

The Ocean has no boss and no land — but it’s not empty. Its creatures are the highest-risk, highest-reward hunts in the game, because a mistake out here leaves you swimming in the middle of nowhere.

What sea creatures does Valheim have?

Three categories: hunters, living islands, and fish.

  • Sea serpents — the aggressive hunters of the open ocean. Fast, persistent, and they drop serpent meat (a high-tier meal ingredient) and serpent scales. Kill them with the abyssal harpoon — drag them to shore and butcher on land, because the meat sinks if you kill them over water.
  • Leviathans — the whale-sized living islands. Barnacle-covered backs that you can mine for chitin — the material for the abyssal razor and harpoon. They dive when you mine them, so park the boat close and jump back aboard before it goes under.
  • Fish — the passive resource. Every biome’s water has its own species, from the Meadows’ perch to the Ashlands’ lava fish; the fishing guide covers the whole table.
  • Seals and Baby Seals — 1.0’s Deep North addition; coastal wildlife, source of Seal Pelt for the Moose Saddle.
  • Bonemaw — the Ashlands’ lava serpent; the same sea-hunter role as the serpent, but in boiling water.

Where do you hunt sea serpents?

On the open ocean, and the best technique is harpoon-and-drag. Sea serpents spawn out in deep water — the deeper the better. The reliable kill is a friend with a harpoon: tag it, drag it toward shore, and let the beach finish it while the boat stays safe. Solo hunters need to kite it shallow and let the water do the work — killing over open water loses the loot.

A ship iced into the frozen sea — the Deep North’s ocean frontier

What’s the Deep North angle?

Seals and frozen-sea hunting. The 1.0 update stretches the ocean meta north: the Deep North’s frozen seas are walkable ice, and the seals that dot the coasts drop the Seal Pelts you need for the Moose Saddle — the taming guide covers that side of the economy.

Which creatures matter most for progression?

Leviathans start the chitin loop; serpents finish it. Chitin from leviathan barnacles crafts the abyssal harpoon — which is what lets you hunt serpents safely — and serpents pay out the meat and scales. It’s a tight loop. The bestiary has the weakness table, and the Ocean biome guide covers sailing itself.
