Valheim World Modifiers: Difficulty, Portals, and Raid Settings
How world modifiers work in Valheim 1.0 — the preset difficulties, custom sliders, what each setting changes, and how they interact with achievements.
World modifiers are the built-in difficulty system — the knobs you turn at world creation to make Valheim easier, harder, or just yours. They’re a first-party feature, not a mod or a cheat, and they don’t touch the cheat flag that achievements care about.
How do you set world modifiers?
At world creation — the modifiers screen — or on a running world via console commands. New worlds get a preset picker plus granular sliders; on an existing world you apply changes through devcommands territory, so check the flag rules in the console commands guide before you reach for it.
What can you change?
Combat difficulty, death penalty, portals, resource rate, raids, and boss spawns. The presets — Easy, Hard, Hardcore, Casual, Immersive, and Hammer for builder-focused runs — set the broad strokes, and the custom sliders underneath cover:
- Combat — enemy damage, health, and aggressiveness scale up or down.
- Portals — can be limited to public, or off entirely for hardcore runs.
- Resources — drop and gathering rates; the “casual” pick doubles your haul.
- Raids — frequency, scaling, or off entirely.
- Death penalty — what you lose on death, up to keeping your whole inventory.
- Boss access — the summon-item and progression levers.
What’s the right preset?
Normal is the intended experience; Casual is the real quality-of-life pick. Most players should run Normal until the game proves otherwise. Casual doubles resources and softens combat — it exists for players who want building over survival. Hard and Immersive are for repeat runs where the default loop is solved; portal-less is its own playstyle — see the boss order guide for how much of the game that one change rewrites.

Do modifiers affect achievements?
No — modifiers are a supported feature, and the cheat flag is only triggered by devcommands. Custom difficulty doesn’t invalidate a run the way console cheats do; the 1.0 achievements system only locks when you reach for actual cheats. The achievements guide has the full rules, and the events guide covers what happens when you crank raid frequency past Normal.
