Valheim Armor Tier List: Best Sets at Every Progression Stage
A Valheim 1.0 armor tier list by stage — leather to Ashlands flametal and the new Deep North sets, with movement penalties, capes, and the best picks per boss.
Armor is the quiet half of your build — food gets the glory, weapons get the kills, but the armor on your back is what decides whether a dodge miss is a scratch or a death. This list ranks sets inside their stage — an S-tier Meadows set isn’t better than a B-tier Deep North set; it means “most worth crafting when you’re there.”
How is this tier list ranked?
Three criteria: crafting cost at its tier, role coverage (stealth vs tank vs caster), and whether it survives the next biome’s fights. Heavier sets trade movement speed for armor value; light sets preserve mobility and feed stealth builds. For the weapon half of the loadout, see the weapon tier list.
What are the S-tier armor sets at each stage?
| Stage | S-tier sets | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Leather | The starter set; cheap, light, enough for Eikthyr |
| Black Forest | Troll hide | Stealth bonus on a biome where trolls are the threat |
| Swamp | Iron | The tank anchor of the early game |
| Mountain | Wolf / silver | Frost resist baked in — saves a mead slot |
| Plains | Padded | The classic endgame meta before the magic era |
| Mistlands | Carapace / Eitr-weave | Tank and caster splits — pick for your build |
| Ashlands | Flametal | Fire-tier stats for the Charred sieges |
| Deep North (1.0) | Four new sets | The 1.0 armor line — Nord, Frostfire, Thunderblood variants |
What’s the role split?
Stealth builds stay light, tanks go heavy, casters take the Eitr sets. Troll hide and the Fenris set feed stealth and speed; the iron-to-flametal ladder is the tank line; the Mistlands’ Eitr-weave and the Deep North’s new sets feed the magic build. Capes stack on top — frost cape for the Mountain, the two new 1.0 capes for the endgame.
What did 1.0 add to armor?
Four new armor sets, two new capes, and two new trinkets — per the official patch notes — plus the Deep North’s pocket upgrades from Haldor (the traders guide has the stock). The new sets live at the Deep North tier; for the biome that makes them matter, see the Deep North guide and the Kall Fimbulbringer fight they’re built for.
What should you wear before each boss?
Match the tier to the fight, not the fashion. The per-boss gear check is in the boss order guide; the short version is: don’t fight a biome’s boss in the biome before’s armor.
