Ocean Biome Guide: Sailing, Serpents, and Leviathans in Valheim

The Ocean is the only biome with no boss and no land to settle — it’s just the water between everything else, and it’s deadlier than most of it. Every tier of the game eventually asks you to sail, and the sea decides whether you arrive.

What lives in the Ocean?

Sea serpents and leviathans — and little else, which is the trap. Serpents hunt you at speed, and leviathans are living islands covered in barnacles that dive the moment you mine them. Small islands dot the map for landing, and the biome’s real population is the fish that feed the late-game economy — see the fishing guide. The sea creatures bestiary covers the hunters.

How do ships work in Valheim?

Three tiers: raft, karve, and longship — each faster and safer than the last. The raft is the emergency vehicle; the karve is the real workhorse that carries cargo and crosses the mid-game; the longship is the endgame freight hauler with the most hull and storage. Sailing is manual — tack into the wind, drop sail to slow — and storms can strand you. Moder’s forsaken power guarantees tailwind while sailing for its duration, which is why the boss order puts her before long crossings.

What can you do out here?

Fish, hunt serpents, harvest chitin, and reach what land can’t give you. Fishing off the boat or a dock is a steady income of high-tier food; serpent meat is a rare meal tier of its own; leviathan barnacles give chitin for the abyssal harpoon and razor. In 1.0, the Deep North’s frozen seas add a new ice-travel layer on top — the Deep North guide covers that edge of the map.

When do you stop sailing?

You don’t — the Ocean is permanent infrastructure. Every new biome unlock is a new crossing, and endgame materials like flax, metals, and the Deep North’s freight all move by ship. Keep a fast boat, a safe harbor, and portals on both ends — the base defense guide has the harbor-building notes.
