Swamp Biome Guide: Iron, Crypts, and Poison in Valheim

The Swamp is Valheim’s dark heart — a drowned, fog-choked forest where the water itself tries to kill you. It holds the iron you’ll spend hours farming, and it’s the first biome where environmental damage matters more than the enemies.

What lives in the Swamp?

Draugr, leeches, blobs, skeletons, and wraiths at night. Draugr are the humanoid backbone — armed, armored, and they come in archer variants — while blobs and oozers stack poison that is the biome’s real boss. Leeches in the water add more poison, and wraiths spawn at night as flying nuisances. Abominations, the giant tree monsters, hide under the mud. See the bestiary for the full weakness table.

What can you gather in the Swamp?

Iron — and the biome runs on it. Muddy scrap piles inside Sunken Crypts are the only iron ore source; smelt it and the entire game opens up — iron weapons, the smithy tier, the works. Outside the crypts you’ll find turnips and turnip seeds (the Swamp’s crop), guck on the big tree trunks, and thistle. The crypts also yield the Withered Bones you need for Bonemass.

What dungeons and structures are here?

Sunken Crypts — locked until The Elder dies. These half-flooded stone vaults are the Swamp’s dungeons and the only reliable source of both iron and Withered Bones. They need the Swamp Key from The Elder to open, are pitch black, and are guarded by draugr — bring a torch, blunt weapons for the skeletons inside, and patience. Withered Bones in hand, the skull altar out in the murk summons Bonemass.

How do you survive the poison?

Poison-resistance mead is not optional in the Swamp. Brewed at the cauldron from thistle and neck tails, it’s the single most important consumable in the game — Bonemass’s poison cloud and the biome’s blobs will shred you without it. The food tier list covers the sausages-and-stew rotation that carries the tier.

When do you leave the Swamp?

After Bonemass drops the Wishbone — the key to silver. That’s the gear check for the Mountain, where frost debuffs and drakes take over. The boss order shows where the Swamp sits on the eight-boss road.
