Mountain Biome Guide: Silver, Wolves, and Moder in Valheim
The Mountain biome in Valheim 1.0 — silver veins, frost debuffs, wolves and drakes, Frost Caves, Dragon Eggs, and Moder's altar.
The Mountain is Valheim’s first biome that fights back environmentally — the altitude itself applies a freezing debuff that drains stamina and health without protection. Past the cold, it’s the richest mining tier in the early game.
What lives in the Mountain?
Wolves, drakes, stone golems, ulvs, and fenrings at night. Wolves hunt in packs and are why the tier favors shields; drakes strafe you with frost breath; stone golems are slow walls of rock that hurt badly; ulvs and fenrings own the night. The full resist profile lives in the bestiary — but the short version is: the cold and the wolves decide your fights, not the terrain.
What can you gather in the Mountain?
Silver, obsidian, and the ingredients for frost protection. Silver veins are the prize — but they’re invisible underground until Bonemass’s Wishbone pings them. Obsidian hangs off the rock faces, and the biome’s wolves, drakes, and freezing debuff make it the tier where food planning actually matters — see the food tier list for what to eat. Dragon Eggs, each 200 weight and non-teleportable, sit in drake nests for the boss summon.
What dungeons and structures are here?
Frost Caves — the mid-game dungeon. Carved into the rock, they hold ulvs, fenrings, and cultists, plus the Fenris hair and claw mats for the tier’s gear. Moder’s altar sits on a peak; the vegvisir stones inside the caves mark it. The Mountain also produces the Wishbone’s hidden treasures — hunt for buried chests as you clear a summit.

How do you survive the cold?
Frost-resistance mead or the wolf cape — one or the other, always. The freezing debuff starts the moment you climb high enough, and both fixes are craftable from the Swamp’s own loot loop. The wolf cape occupies your cape slot, not your chest, so it stacks with real armor — carry the mead anyway as a backup for deaths and cave runs. Stone golems are best left alone until you’re confident — they don’t drop anything essential.
When do you leave the Mountain?
After Moder drops Dragon Tears. Those unlock the Artisan Table — Blast Furnace, Windmill, Spinning Wheel — and the Plains era opens up. The boss order guide has the full progression route.
