Moder Boss Guide: Summon and Beat the Mountain Dragon
How to summon Moder with three Dragon Eggs, her fire weakness and frost breath, the flying phase, and what Dragon Tears unlock in Valheim.
Moder, the frost wyvern of the Mountain, is boss four of eight and the first real logistics test: her summoning items are Dragon Eggs that weigh 200 each and refuse to go through portals. Plan the haul before you plan the fight.
How do you summon Moder?
Place three Dragon Eggs on her altar in the Mountain biome. Dragon Eggs sit in drake nests on the snowy peaks, each guarded by drakes — the same creatures that harass you across the whole biome. At 200 weight apiece, you will need multiple trips or the Megingjord belt from the traders (and check Haldor’s stock for the Deep North pocket upgrades if you’re on fresh 1.0 saves). Eggs cannot pass through portals, so pick an altar within hauling distance of your nests.
What are Moder’s stats and attacks?
Moder has 7,500 HP, takes 50% extra damage from fire, and is immune to frost and spirit. Poison and every physical type land at full value, so spirit weapons like Frostner are wasted here. She splits the fight into two rhythms:
| Attack | Damage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bite / claw swipes | Melee | Grounded phase — punish windows |
| Frost breath | Heavy frost DoT | Grounded — stay off the center line |
| Ice rain | Frost projectiles | Flying phase — strafe, don’t tunnel on her |
When she takes to the air she is unreachable by melee — that’s your bow phase.
What is the best strategy against Moder?
Bring fire arrows and a blunt or pierce melee weapon, and use cover against her breath. Drakes and wolves wander in constantly, so clear the arena first or they’ll decide the fight. While she’s grounded, dodge into her flanks and swing; while airborne, loose fire arrows and watch for the ice rain telegraphs. Frost-resistance mead or the wolf cape handles both her breath and the biome’s freezing debuff — without it the cold drains you mid-fight. Health-heavy Mountain-tier food per the food tier list is mandatory, and stamina discipline matters more than damage here. For what to swing and shoot, the weapons tier list ranks every Mountain-era weapon.
What does Moder drop?
Dragon Tears, a Moder trophy, and her Forsaken Power. The tears are the real prize: they unlock the Artisan Table, the station that opens the Blast Furnace, Windmill, and Spinning Wheel — the crafting gate to the Plains era and black metal. Her trophy power grants guaranteed tailwind while sailing for its five-minute duration — plus +300 carry weight, +10% movement speed, and 50% frost resistance — which is why veterans take Moder before any long ocean crossing — see the boss order for where she sits on the road to Yagluth.
