Valheim Fishing Guide: Rod, Bait, Every Fish, and Cooking
How fishing works in Valheim 1.0 — Haldor's rod and baits, the biome fish table, stamina costs, cooking recipes, and the new Deep North catches.
Fishing is Valheim’s optional economy — a completely skippable system that quietly supplies some of the best food in the game if you bother with it. It’s also one of the only non-combat activities that scales all the way to the Deep North.
How do you start fishing?
Buy the rod and bait from Haldor, then find water. The fishing rod is a traders exclusive — Haldor sells it in the Black Forest, along with the basic bait tiers. Equip the rod, attach bait, cast into a lake or the ocean, and wait for the bobber to dunk; the reel-in costs stamina, so the bigger the fish, the more the fight resembles a mini-boss.
Where does each fish live?
Every biome has its own species — the fish table is biome-locked. Meadows waters hold the humble perch and pike, the Swamp has its murky catches, the Mountain’s lakes produce the cold-water fish, and the Deep North’s frozen seas carry the 1.0 additions. The bestiary covers the broader creature table; fish are the passive end of it.
What do you do with fish?
Cook them — fish dishes sit near the top of the food meta. Raw fish is bait-tier; cooked fish is health-and-stamina tier. The food tier list has the dish rankings — the Deep North’s fish soup is one of 1.0’s new staples — and fish trophies hang on your wall like any other kill.
What’s new in 1.0 for fishing?
The Deep North’s fish species, plus the feast integration. The new biome’s catches feed the Northern Morning Fare pipeline — 1.0’s big feast — and the frozen-sea fishing holes are their own thing. The Deep North guide covers the biome’s full content; the sea creatures guide covers the bigger things that swim.

Is fishing worth the time?
If you eat fish, yes — if you’re rushing bosses, skip it. Fishing is the slow-burn food economy; the fast path through the game runs on forage-and-farm. But the meals are real, the rod is a one-time purchase, and the fishing trophies are the best wall decoration in the game. For the boss-side of what to eat before a fight, see the boss order guide.
