Valheim Bestiary: Every Creature, Weakness, and Where It Lives
The complete Valheim 1.0 creature overview — bosses, minibosses, hostile and passive creatures per biome, damage types, and star difficulty scaling.
Valheim’s creature roster is the thing that makes its biomes feel different — every region has its own fauna, and knowing what’s hostile before it decides you are is most of the survival curve. This page is the map; per-creature deep dives live in the biome guides.
How do creature types work in Valheim?
Five buckets: bosses, minibosses, aggressive, passive, and NPCs. Bosses are summoned and gate progression (see the boss order). Minibosses — the Hildir’s-quest trio and dungeon guardians — are named one-offs. Aggressive creatures are the world enemies; passive ones are food and materials. NPCs like the traders sell you things. Every creature has a damage-type profile — blunt, slash, pierce, fire, frost, lightning, poison, spirit — and matching your weapon to it is the difference between a one-shot and a war of attrition. The weapons tier list ranks what to bring at each progression tier.
What does the star rating mean?
Starred creatures (1-star, 2-star) are elite variants with more health and damage. They spawn at night or in higher-difficulty areas, hit roughly twice as hard as the base version, and are the reason “just a wolf pack” can still kill you in silver armor. Night is when the stars come out — the events guide covers how raid spawns interact with that.
What lives in each biome?
Each biome has a signature ecosystem — here’s the shortlist.
| Biome | Signature creatures | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Deer, boar, neck, Greydwarf | Night Greydwarf packs |
| Black Forest | Greydwarf, troll, skeleton, ghost | Trolls flatten camps |
| Swamp | Draugr, leech, blob, wraith, abomination | Poison, always |
| Mountain | Wolf, drake, stone golem, ulv, fenring | Wolves in packs |
| Ocean | Sea serpent, leviathan, fish | Serpents at speed |
| Plains | Fuling, lox, deathsquito, growth | Deathsquito one-shots |
| Mistlands | Seeker, Gjall, tick, hare, Dvergr | Seeker swarms |
| Ashlands | Charred, morgen, volture, asksvin, bonemaw | Fortress sieges |
| Deep North | Moose, seal, Fallen Warrior, Writhan | Everything — it’s endgame |
Where do I go for a specific creature?
Match the creature to its biome, then check the damage profile. The sea creatures guide covers the water hunters, Deep North creatures lists the 1.0 additions, and taming covers what’s domesticable — boars, wolves, lox, and the new rideable mounts.
